Short Review

At Cody's App Academy, Atha is a student with a strong exploratory spirit. He really enjoys challenging himself, which is evident when he develops video games. The games he creates often include features with a fairly high level of complexity. He has the ability to independently build whatever he sets his mind to. This was especially clear in the Android TOPDEV Season 02 project, where he developed the game Angry Birds x Sushi Cat.

Achievement

Coding

90 - Atha’s coding skills are beyond doubt. He is highly capable of troubleshooting coding issues and consistently finds effective solutions. Moreover, he is never hesitant to push past his skill boundaries, taking on the challenge of building complex and demanding features.

Game Design

85 - Atha’s level of game design skills can be considered quite solid. What he needs to further develop is his experience in playing a wider variety of video game genres. This will help sharpen his sense as a game designer, allowing him to better understand the mechanics of reward and punishment systems within the gaming world.

Artwork

85 - Although artwork is not Atha’s main focus, his creations are far from ordinary. He is capable of producing impressive pixel art pieces. In the TOPDEV Season 02 materials, he faced a greater challenge in developing the visual aspects, and Cody will continue working to help him maximize his potential in this area.

Problem Solving

90 - His problem-solving skills are unquestionable, especially in coding. However, when it comes to game design, he needs more hands-on experience playing a variety of video game genres. This will help him strengthen his problem-solving abilities in that area.

Project Summary

Atha successfully completed the dinosaur run game in TOPDEV Season 01 with impressive results. Although simple, the game was considered to be of high quality. He is now working on his Season 02 project, which is a semi–Angry Birds game with a touch of Portal. This project is far more complex than the one from Season 01—about ten times more complex, to be exact. The game involves building many levels, with a target of 30–50 levels, and Atha has already completed the first 10.

The development process covers not only level design but also game design, art design, and menu design. Technically, before moving on to level 11 and beyond, Atha is focusing on finalizing the user experience flow first, and then continuing with the next levels. As of now, the demo version of the game is already playable, with the menu flow nearly complete.

Planning

The next learning target is to strengthen Atha’s game design skills. Game design is essentially the planning behind a video game, and it is often the most challenging part for students—even more difficult than coding itself. In addition, we will continue to enhance Atha’s art design, as he already has a solid foundation that can be further refined to make his visuals much more polished.

Season 02 is a long-term project with highly ambitious goals, comparable to the work of an indie game development studio. The difference is that this game is being built entirely by Atha himself, under the guidance of a trainer from Cody’s App Academy. We are very excited to see Atha complete this project successfully, and we are confident that it will become one of his strongest portfolio pieces—an excellent reference for university applications or even future job opportunities.
